We finally made it out to the Missouri River! I waited patiently for runoff to subside in hopes of hitting the caddis hatch during lower flows. After record snows and a long runoff season flow rates dipped below 6,000 cfs and I got the word that the caddis hatch was on. More on that in a moment... We planned on camping at Holter Lake but upon arrival we found the campsite full. Not to be discouraged we drove around looking for a place to spend the night. After minimal effort we settled on an Montana FWP fishing access area with camp sites. We got the last available spot! From there we looked for some hiking trails in the area but struck out. A local convenience store clerk pointed us toward a frontage road that he believed may have had some trails spur off of it. No trails....but...
The road led us to Little Prickly Pear Creek. Supposedly full of rattlesnakes, we found none.
I did find some small rainbows, cuttbows, and browns, all eager to munch on the old Elk Hair Caddis. I fished here for about an hour. Then I moved to this railroad bridge and caught a few more little fish.
After a few fish I packed it up and we headed back to Holter Lake to wet our feet and relax until prime time. The lake was nice but the lack of hiking and busy feel of the park was a bit of a turn off. The company of my wife and the cool breeze made it all worth while!
